In the hallway from the bookstore to Joe’s office, a locked glass case contains rare first editions of Faulkner, Welty, Hemingway, and other iconic literary masters of the twentieth century. The fifty-nine chapters that comprise this self-proclaimed tour de force were written, according to the author himself, in four-hour bursts over the course of just six weeks.

Robinson grew up in New Orleans and worked an internship at the Faulkner Society. He became friends with Joe and Rosemary, so taking over the shop felt like a natural transition. Joe and Rosemary DeSalvo created a literary mecca in Pirate's Alley. The first experience of stepping into Faulkner House Books from the flagstone paved alley that runs beside St. Louis Cathedral is unforgettable. Joe retired from practicing oilfield law before opening Faulkner House Books. Rosemary’s background is in public relations, media and interior design.

It’s where they both can live and work, and where a small boy is fed his favorite meal, his mother's homemade pasta puttanesca. It's prepared next to a kitchen alcove filled with Provençal linens and shelves of yet even more books — this time, cookbooks.
A second novel, Mosquitoes (1927), launched a satirical attack on the New Orleans literary scene, including identifiable individuals, and can perhaps best be read as a declaration of artistic independence. Back in Oxford—with occasional visits to Pascagoula on the Gulf Coast—Faulkner again worked at a series of temporary jobs but was chiefly concerned with proving himself as a professional writer. Much of the store’s charm is the place itself, an 1837 townhouse where Faulkner himself lived while writing his first novel, Soldier’s Pay. Rosemary and Joe, who founded the bookstore, renovated and furnished the building exquisitely. We’ve never sold online, and don’t have so much as a cash register (although we do accept credit cards!). Like so many of you out there, we’re not quite sure what the future holds.
Faulkner and Hemingway did not communicate directly—in fact, they may have met only once—but traded commentary mostly indirectly, through other writers and critics. This two-room bookstore, decorated with beautiful antiques and fine mahogany bookcases was founded in 1988 by Joseph J. DeSalvo Jr. and his wife, Rosemary James. After buying the building, the couple did historical renovations on the property to make it the perfect spot to welcome bibliophiles from all over the world. Down an alley, just off Jackson Square, is a book lover’s sanctuary, where one can find a curated selection of Southern literature and classics. Located at 624 Pirates Alley, Faulkner House Books is in a townhouse that was built in 1837 that in the 1920s was home to famed writer, William Faulkner.
We have hardcover and paperback editions of all of his novels, as well as one of the best collections of rare and first editions around, including signed volumes. We also have a private collection of his photographs, letters, and other memorabilia, such as this 1978 letter to Professor Jay Martin at UC Irvine, alongside a 1950 photograph of Percy and wife Bunt vacationing in Cuba.
